Preparing for your newborn photoshoot
Giliane E. Mansfeldt is professional photographer based in Saint Paul area of Minnesota. One of her favorite types of photography is newborn portraiture to help welcome the newest member of a loving family into the world. In fact, Giliane loves newborn photography so much, that she has specialized in newborn photography. The studio is built with newborns in mind. There is s special photoshoot bay in studio just for babies. The bay includes plenty of props and backgrounds to showcase your new bundle of joy, but it is encouraged for you to bring any special sentimental props you would like to include. Are you wondering how to prepare for your newborn’s photoshoot? Here are some of the most common questions we receive from new parents:
How can I make sure we get adorable “sleepy” photos?
The best photos happen while your baby is sleepy and easy to pose, so we would love to photograph your child within their first two weeks. However, we know the first days of bringing your baby home can be extremely hectic, so we’re happy to work with your child at any age. If possible, it’s best to keep your baby awake for two or three hours before your session time so he or she will be sleepy and willing to pose. We also suggest waiting until you arrive at the studio to feed your baby, as most newborns are soothed by feeding times. If he or she does need to nurse beforehand, try to only give a light feeding.
When you bring your baby to the studio, please carry them inside with their car seat. This way, you won’t have to wake them up to bring them in. It may be a good idea for you to bring an extra bottle, because newborns generally eat more than usual during a photo session. Additionally, a pacifier can help make your baby feel comfortable and settled at the start of the session. We won’t use the pacifier during actual photos, but it’s a great method of soothing your newborn beforehand.
What else should I do to prepare for the session?
If your newborn has dry or flaky skin on the day of the photoshoot, Giliane suggests applying a small amount of hypoallergenic baby oil over the flaky areas before you leave your house. she also suggests dressing your baby in loose clothing which doesn’t have to be pulled off over his or her head. The easier to remove, the better, so we have less chance of waking up your child. We also recommend loose clothing because it’s less likely to leave lines on their skin.
As for your clothing, we recommend wearing layers! Our studio is kept pretty warm for your baby’s comfort, so you may want to remove top layers once you get settled inside.
What will I need to do during the session?
Most of the time, nothing! Giliane has over 15 years of photography experience, so she’s very comfortable working with newborns. You can bring some work to do or even take a nap! If you’ve ordered a siblings package to have photos taken of your newborn with an older brother or sister, we will ask you to keep the sibling occupied when it comes time to take pictures of the newborn individually. We suggest bringing some toys or books that can hold the sibling’s attention.
How long will the photoshoot take?
Our newborn photoshoots usually take between 2 and 4 hours.
Do you offer any discounts for newborn photography?
Giliane wants to make sure you love your portraits—including the amount you pay for them! We offer several newborn packages to accommodate your budget, as well as a special “bundle” deal if you choose to include pregnancy photos or one year birthday photos.
